FUNDING SOURCE: Independence Association receives funding from neighboring municipalities, as well as additional funding from the Maine Department of Behavioral and Developmental Services, the Maine Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in the Maine Department of Labor, the United Way of Mid Coast Maine, the Department of Human Services, the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, and a variety of gifts and grants from public and private sources. Independence Association also receives funding from membership dues, consumers and their families, private donations, bequests and other gifts.

POPULATION SERVED: Youth with developmental disabilities

SERVICE TYPE: The Independence Association provides support for individuals with developmental disabilities such as mental retardation and autism and individuals with mental illness. These individuals may face personal challenges in the areas of communication, learning, mobility, economic selfsufficiency, and in their capacities for independent living. All of Independence Association services and programs are designed to incorporate the hopes, desires, needs and interests of those served to help them enjoy greater independence in their communities. SERVICES PROVIDED: The Independence Association provides volunteer mentors for disabled individuals who take them to entertaining activities. The mentors are individuals without disabilities.
