Kansas Disability/Violence Awareness Project–KS

Target Audience

Community advocacy agencies involved in helping women with disabilities who experience domestic violence or sexual assault

This project will support a collaborative effort between Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), and community advocacy agencies to provide technical assistance, training, education and awareness to Kansas advocacy programs on violence against women with disabilities. Additionally, 4-5 target communities will be able to collaborate locally to identify barriers for women with disabilities accessing services and create solutions. This project will provide inter-agency training and support to enhance service delivery to women with disabilities who experience domestic violence or sexual assault by:  1) providing audio-conferencing, on-site visits, discussion groups, and training–disability advocates will increase understanding of abuse and violence, and domestic violence and sexual assault advocates will increase understanding of disability; 2) providing technical assistance/support to independent living centers, domestic violence and sexual assault programs, Adult and Child Protective Services, health care, criminal justice and Area Agencies on Aging–aimed at creating a coordinated community response to violence against women with disabilities through developing cooperative agreements for inter-agency response; 3) providing legal expertise to facilitate systems change by reviewing rules and procedures to identify how they create barriers to women with disabilities, 4) developing posters and brochures to increase awareness, and 5) reproducing existing materials in alternative formats.
