This webpage describes how the bladder works before and after paralysis; why people with paralysis are at high risk for urinary tract infection (UTI); some of the symptoms of UTI; the importance of proper cleaning of urinary care supplies, keeping the skin clean, and drinking the proper amount of fluids in helping prevent infection; and the increased risk of bladder cancer in some people with spinal cord injury.
