Healthy Lifestyles (HL) for People with Disabilities Program

Oregon Institute on Disability and Development

Format             Program Evaluation

In 2002, the Center on Community Accessibility of the Oregon Institute on Disability and Development received funding for a three-year grant called the Healthy Lifestyles Evaluation Project from the United States Department of Education’s National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to evaluate the effectiveness of the Healthy Lifestyles for People with Disabilities curriculum.  In 2007, the Center on Community Accessibility received a two-year exploratory/development (R21) research grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute for Child and Human Development (NICHD) to test the performance of the HL curriculum using a community-based population of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This research project, entitled “Healthy Lifestyles for People with Intellectual Disabilities” (HLID) uses a prospective case-control design consisting of an intervention and a control group.   Results showed an increase in healthy behaviors three months after attending the program, compared with individuals who did not attend the program.
