Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Public Health Services’ Diabetes Control and Prevention Program (DCP)
The DCP has received funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since 1994. Activities supported by the Mariana DCP include maintaining a diabetes prevalence registry of about 1,500 people receiving diabetes care, which provides prevalence data by age, sex, ethnic group, insurance coverage, and complications; educating diabetes patients through a support group for patients attending the diabetes clinic which meets regularly to discuss diabetes and ways to improve self-management of the disease; enhancing community understanding and awareness via a diabetes awareness and education program for the media, private industry, local politicians, and lay people; and sponsoring a workshop for public and private medical providers to educate them on the results of the Diabetes Complications Control Trial and their implications for preventive care strategies and practices of care for people with type 2 diabetes.
